There was a group of professional photographer, movie director and some students from Japan who spent their time in exposing hill-tribes’ culture and have a corner view of Fair-trade at TTC.

It is known that promoting awareness of inter-change culture is one of the missions that TENOHIRA organization has been doing apart from women trafficking issue.

Mr.Keigo Momose, study tour organizer from TENOHIRA said “the group visited to Karen village near by Chiang Mai to see Karen culture and life. Then brought them to TTC show room where handicraft products from villages are sold to provide sustainable income for the tribe people.” Some comments suggested that to have more information of the producers and the product story itself to display on each items.

FAIR TRADE PROMOTION

The beauty of culture has great attraction to many tour programs and visiting to hill-tribe people who live around northern Thailand is one of the unforgettable things for many visitors and tourist. At the same time, study tours become more popular for international students’ exposure trip.

It is sure that some will see only how the people, the places and villages look like but some will have a bigger interest into historical trail and traditional arts. On the other hand, it creates another pathway of promoting fair trade for TTC as its dedication of fair trade principles by presenting, discussion and showing the real products in the market to all visitors.

We really appreciate for our friends and students who were with us during their study tours. It does not necessarily need to be only a trade buyer or partners but there are a lot more to expose with TTC and its producer groups. Knowing only the simple life of the hill-tribe people in the villages will not be enough but it is good to see their world standard beautiful hand made products in fair trade market industry.

With arrangement of Department of Export Promotion in Thailand, Bangkok International Gift Fair & Bangkok International House-ware Fair 2008 is coming up once again in this October. Behind the CRAFTs

With the tittle of “Meet the People Tour”, we (TTC) have one more time to welcome Traidcraft customer group here is Chiang Mai and spent half day trip to Mea Ka Pyiang where they met some Karen Producers. A group was led by Thai Craft (Bangkok) with net work arrangement of Traidcraft UK and Phu Phiang Tour Company.

This group has special interest in visiting northern Thailand, especially craft producer groups in villages to see their life and working process. It is also known that some will present about what they have seen here in Thailand when they return back home.

Many of us are mentioning what the handicraft look likes and how the quality is but we forget sometime to dig up and see who make it and where it comes from. It is the main purpose of the tour group to meet the people behind the products. In other words, it is opportunity to feel the real life of craft producers in villages.

It is a time to see “Real life and Real arts” of Hmong producer group from northern Thailand in Netherlands.

Life is simple with colourful traditional dress and its own beauty among hill-tribes people. Hmong is one of those tribes who rich in cultures and specialized in making Hmong traditional Batik Cloth in multi pattern designs. No more only in hidden jungle but time to bring up their hand made skill to global stage and seeking more markets.

On 23rd July - 2008, with the arrangement and program of “Return to Sender” from Netherlands, Huay Luakk was selected as representative village of Hmong producer groups where TTC is providing Artisans Training. The truth Artisans life and working process of Hmong Batik Cloth production was taken as film story record by “Return to Sender” group during that specific training day and accompanied by some TTC staffs.

In film story, famous Netherlands TV star Ms.Katja was main performer where she passed through the village and met Hmong women producer group to learn about current project and future market possibility.

Padu Village and Ahka Embroidery

Padu, three hours drive from Chiang Mai, is one of Ahka villages where Ahka embroideries have been conserved and brought up to international fair trade markets through TTC sales channel. Patterns and designs are eventually developed by Ahka Artisans based on current market demands.

Nevertheless, it will never come to the global markets unless there are overseas partners, another sales channel in other word, who can provide solid orders throughout the year and spread to the world.

Through our network, we create communities and increase overseas partners. While spreading the missions, 18th July, 2008 become a time to welcome Liz and Mark from ExoticWORLDgifts.com who spent one day trip to Padu producer group.

February 4th 2008 – Eileen Kardos from Eileen Import Co. UK, was on her business trip to Chiang Mai, Thailand and visited to the Office where she had craft items business discussion and spent time to expose our main shop.

February 25th 2008 – Vi Cottrell from Trade Aid – New Zealand, visited us and had discussion on our current partnership and how to increase our future trading in a way of Fair Trade principles.

March 10th – 13th 2008 – Creative Days where TearCraft partners from Asia joined design forum at Porn Ping Tower Hotel which is located in the heart of Chiang Mai, Thailand. We are proud of being a host and thanks to forum conductor Rebecca Spender (a designer from TearCraft
UK).

After the forum, she was accompanied by Cecile (a designer from Artisanat SEL – France) and visited TTC local main shop, Fair Trade shop and our producer group in
Lisu village to see the real life of being a

I was there for some time although i can't be ther every month. See those people quite interested in fiar trade products, handmade, handicrafts from Thailand. It was crowed day at Embassador Hotel in Bangkok.

Most of them are Japanese as far as I know but other farang are interested for shopping fair trade products.

You can find out all sorts of traditional clothes, handicrafts, lanna coffee and so on.. For the month of May, there were more than 40 producer groups were participating in fairtrade promotion in Bangkok.

Fairtrade movements in Bangkok is moving and most traditional value things are sold every month at Embassador Hotel Bangkok. I was there to have more experiences in Fairtrade. During this month May, more than 40 groups from villages and other organization were there and more than 60 group used to be there during seasonal holiday like October, December and summer holidays.

Nowadays, fair trade is moving as quickly as possible and become more popular than before. As it is a popular one, some other trading are copying to be fair or some are doing a real fair trade for international standard.

To have a clear features of Fair Trade Standard, note that IFAT (International Federation Of Alternative Trade) has 10 standards to follow in fair trade:

IFAT prescribes 10 standards that Fair Trade organizations must follow in their day-to-day work and carries out continuous monitoring to ensure these standards are upheld:

Creating opportunities for economically disadvantaged producers

Fair Trade is a strategy for poverty alleviation and sustainable development. Its purpose is to create opportunities for producers who have been economically disadvantaged or marginalized by the conventional trading system.

Transparency and accountability
Fair Trade involves transparent management and commercial relations to deal fairly and respectfully with trading partners.

Capacity building
Fair Trade is a means to develop producers’ independence. Fair Trade relationships provide continuity, during which producers and their marketing organizations can improve their management skills and their access to new markets.

Promoting Fair Trade

Fair Trade Organizations raise awareness of Fair Trade and the possibility of greater justice in world trade. They provide their customers with information about the organization, the products, and in what conditions they are made. They use honest advertising and marketing techniques and aim for the highest standards in product quality and packing.

Payment of a fair price

A fair price in the regional or local context is one that has been agreed through dialogue and participation. It covers not only the costs of production but enables production which is socially just and environmentally sound. It provides fair pay to the producers and takes into account the principle of equal pay for equal work by women and men. Fair Traders ensure prompt payment to their partners and, whenever possible, help producers with access to pre-harvest or pre-production financing.

Gender Equity

Fair Trade means that women’s work is properly valued and rewarded. Women are always paid for their contribution to the production process and are empowered in their organizations.

Working conditions

Fair Trade means a safe and healthy working environment for producers. The participation of children (if any) does not adversely affect their well-being, security, educational requirements and need for play and conforms to the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child as well as the law and norms in the local context.

Child Labour

Fair Trade Organizations respect the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child, as well as local laws and social norms in order to ensure that the participation of children in production processes of fairly traded articles (if any) does not adversely affect their well-being, security, educational requirements and need for play. Organizations working directly with informally organised producers disclose the involvement of children in production.

The environment

Fair Trade actively encourages better environmental practices and the application of responsible methods of production.

Trade Relations
Fair Trade Organizations trade with concern for the social, economic and environmental well-being of marginalized small producers and do not maximise profit at their expense. They maintain long-term relationships based on solidarity, trust and mutual respect that contribute to the promotion and growth of Fair Trade. Whenever possible producers are assisted with access to pre-harvest or pre-production advance payment.

Craft Journey in Thailand

The number of fair trade members are increasing day by day and most of Europe markets are focusing on South East Asia where they can get traditional value and high crafted items.

Among them, I was with Thai Tribal Craft in Chiang Mai for a few month and also have been to Thai Craft promotion sale place at Ambassador Hotel Bangkok from 10am – 2 pm where hundreds of buyers and tourist are spending their time. The program is once in a month and you can look around if you are in Thailand.

As it is focusing on culture hand made things, some sells traditional clothes, baskets, arts, musical instruments, silversmiths, coffee and other traditional things. You will see more than these and enjoy events and occasions of Craft Promotion Sales in Thailand.

The Origins Of Fair Trade

It said that in the early year of 1891, the idea of fair trade was began by some employee to against capitalists in Europe. After sometimes, the market was failed and continued by another groups for a fair price of buyer or some focused in the right of producers' rights.

Here you can read through with the early years movements of fair trade and it's logo " Fair trade principles have deep roots in European societies long before the first structured alternative trading organizations (ATOs) emerged following World War II. Many of the fundamental concepts behind fair trade actually show a great resemblance with pre-capitalist ideas about the organization of the economy and society.

The notion of the ‘old moral economy’ is a fitting example of such conceptions. E. P. Thompson, in his work on 18th century England, described a society where “notions of common well being, often supported by paternalistic traditional authorities, imposed some limits on the free operations of the market”.[1] Farmers were then not allowed to manipulate prices by withholding their products to wait for price increases. The actions of the middlemen were always considered legally suspect, were severely restricted and the poor were provided opportunities to buy basic staple foods in small parcels. Fair trade was already seen as a way to address market failures; although the concept mainly revolved around consumer, rather than producer, rights.[2]

There was even a novel produer mentioned in his book of "Max Havelaar"

There are also a few instances in which fair trade in the 'old moral economy' is focused on producer rights: as early as 1859, Dutch author Multatuli (the pen name of Eduard Douwes Dekker) questioned the injustice of the colonial and capitalist system towards commodity producers in his novel Max Havelaar. The fictional tale recounts the story of Max Havelaar, a Nederlandse Trade Company employee, who leaves everything to work in solidarity with local Indonesian workers. This account draws a direct correlation between the wealth and the prosperity of Europe and the poverty of the suffering of other parts of the world.[3]

The documentary report says "The fair trade movement as we know today has undergone several important changes since its early days following World War II. Fair trade, first seen as a form of charity advocated by religious organizations, has radically changed in structure, philosophy and approach: the past fifty years have witnessed massive changes in the nature of fair trade proponents, the products traded themselves and their distribution networks."

Fair Trade Certified Mark in US and Canada

According to Wikipedia, we can see many kinds of Fair Trade Certified Mark according to each region or market places.

Here, we can have a look Certified Mark in Us and Canada which started in year of 1997 and 1998.

The Fair Trade Certified Mark is a certification mark used in Canada and in the United States. It appears on products as an independent guarantee that disadvantaged producers in the developing world are getting a better deal. The Fair Trade Certified Mark is the North American equivalent of the International Fairtrade Certification Mark used in 17 countries in Europe, Asia, Australia and New Zealand.

For a product to carry either Certification Marks, it must come from FLO-CERT inspected and certified producer organizations. The crops must be grown and harvested in accordance with the International Fairtrade standards set by FLO International. The supply chain is also monitored by FLO-CERT to ensure the integrity of labelled products. Only TransFair USA or TransFair Canada licensees can use the Fair Trade Certified Mark on their products.

The Canadian Fair Trade Certified Mark was introduced by TransFair Canada on the Canadian market in 1997.

The American Fair Trade Certified Mark was introduced by TransFair USA on the American market in 1998.

International Understanding of Fair Trade

Peoply are looking for what is a fair thing which can make and control discreminations among each nations. One of my chinese friends said "People are always cheating in doing businees. They only think about the money and see the current situation only. They won't think or pity on you." Well, this is a big problem in economic although we can't control anything and it used to happen since the history.

But there are some people who is thinking about fair things in a peace way... Now, fair trading become more and more popular among other trading systems.

According to International Organization FINE (Fair-trade Labeling Organizations International, International Fair Trade Association, Network of European World-shops and European Fair Trade Association),"Fair Trade is a trading partnership, based on dialogue, transparency and respect, which seeks greater equity in international trade. It contributes to sustainable development by offering better trading conditions to, and securing the rights of marginalized producers and workers- especially in the South."

Nowadays, people are sufering more from all sorts of economic and political effects which reallly make a big gap among the people. Developing countries and developed countries are quite different in all level of human society.

But to save and do something for the good things to others, we, the people need to think more about how can we create a better human society in fair and peace ways. As we have seen before, the normal markets and fair trade market might be quite different pricing strategies.

Of course, normal market will focus only on selling and profit-orented but whereas, fair trade is focusing on fair price for its business partners and all other customers. Moreover, it is working only for marginalized and disadvantaged workers among human soceity..
